What you should know about Microsoft and your business.

March 8th, 2010 by Dustin

I am yanking this straight out of Seth Godin’s book "Tribes" I am a huge fan of his stuff.

The quote is from page 92. Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, said, "Google’s not a real company. It’s a house of cards." He also said, "there can’t be any more deep technology in Facebook than what dozens of people could write in a couple of years. That’s for sure."

Funny because Microsoft is playing catch up to Google.

Two big examples…
One- BING. (B.ecause I.t’s N-ot G.oogle)
Two- It is now giving away windows 10.

(you’ll note that Google has given away it’s service for a while now…gmail, analytics and google’s search….you know)

FYI: My fishtank blog is on google’s blogger platform as well.

What this means to your business is easy. Expect the unexpected and don’t rule out that wild idea that the competitor is doing. Don’t stick to the norm. Bust out and do something wild. You might fall, or you might have a huge hit!

Ever heard of Big Ass Fans? How can you not love it? Do some people hate their name, sure. But way more people love it then hate it.

Risks aren’t easy, but the reward is worth the nervousness you have before.

On a Green Thumb note. I was pretty nervous the first time I ever painted my thumb green for a networking event.  Do you have any idea how many people LOVED it?  I had one lady buy from me the next day cause of it.  Do you know how many haters I have encountered with my Green Thumb.

ONE.

Do you think I give a rats about the one guy who negatively commented on it? Heck no. I got people who demand it now and feel let down when i don’t have it!

Take a risk, do something out of the norm. Do something wow… Or something Green WOW . ;)

It might work.

Goal Hit, Reward coming up on Wednesday.

March 7th, 2010 by Dustin

Goals are killer. I wish I would have started setting them earlier in life. I guess it takes time.

A few things that I have learned about goals…
–Always have them visible. If they aren’t around, they aren’t being attended to. I used to keep mine on my mirror in my bathroom. Now they are in the front pocket of my notebooks and on my walls at work.

–They have to have a solid measure. I couldn’t say, "Hang out with Jessica more." That’s too open. Now, "Have one date night a week." That’s a measurable goal.

–Don’t set them too high. I’ve set wild goals that I never could have hit, then just gave up thinking, "this won’t happen." When they are attainable, you get the feeling of accomplishment when they achieved.

and the most fun part……

REWARD yourself for hitting the Goal….ummm ehh DUH.
We hit our revenue goal for last year.

This Wednesday I am heading out west to celebrate by snowboarding for a week. That is my reward. A week snowboarding out west.

Mammoth MT  California….here I come!!!!

“You’re growing on me….”

February 17th, 2010 by Dustin

I was meeting with a prospect today who was flipping through our contract/proposal ect.

He flips over the back of our testimonial sheet and goes, "What’s this all about?’

He was refering to our thumb print logo.

I told him quickly, "We’re Green Thumb, we’re gonna plant your business online."  "You’re gonna get more green in the blue grass."

The guy caught on quick.  He goes, "You’re growing on me."  I smiled and so did he.

He then whipped out his pen and slapped his name on our contract.  Boo-yah! Sale baby.

We continued talking about what was going to happen next.

As I was leaving I politely thanked him for his business and said, "We appreciate the shot."  He said to me…"Funny you use that term, cause that’s exactly what is going to happen if this doesn’t work out."

Phone book companies pitching search

February 17th, 2010 by Dustin

Today for the second time I heard about the search engine package that a certain phone book is offering.

Funny; companies that killed it for so long by killing trees and printing phonebooks are now trying to morph into the media that is slowly killing them.

The best part of it is that they aren’t even doing it the right way. Pay Per Click. Please, PPC is slowly churning out less and less of an ROI.

Here is the part that gets me. They are selling this with out any sort of keyword research. They are apparently signing people up for keywords that I doubt get any traffic. Fraud clicks and all.

I guess its a good business model though…"sign up for this for X a month, then pay us every month."

I used play that game. I sold leads, people bought the leads. When they were done with the leads, they bought more from me. Similar cycle… good for the seller, the buyer, not so much.

I got smart though. I learned how to make my own leads. Now I spend what little extra cheddar I have on juicing one of my original plants in the, "green house" Now I sell the fruits of it.

We don’t mess with PPC  much.   But honestly, who clicks on the side ads anyways? Do you click on the poorly targeted-obviously a national chain ad on the side of a Google search.

No?

Oh, me neither.

Sadly I’m only one man and can’t hope to stop everyone who is wasting there money on Pay Per click here in town.

If only I had an army of salesmen like the phone book companies…

A call from a Youtube video today

February 15th, 2010 by Dustin

This morning I got a call from a guy named Wil out in Colorado. He was looking for more of our Joomla training videos. I told him I was glad that he enjoyed them but that I couldn’t help him with the specific problem he was having.

I gave him Jarod’s cell phone number. He then called Jarod looking for help. I wouldn’t have given him Jarod’s cell if he didn’t ask me what it would cost to fix his problem. Jarod being the almighty was pissed I had someone call him. (for those of you who have worked with tech guys, you’ll understand their mentality.) I still love you Jarod, even if you get pissed when something positive happens.

Here’s the point of this post however. Have you ever had anyone call you from a YouTube video you posted? This was our first time, but I’ll put this into a bigger picture….All we did was give value.

That’s it.

Did the guy give us his credit card number then and there? Heck no, but someday someone will…..

I’ll be posting some easy tips for you readers soon…

For now, if any of you have a fishtank, you can check out my blog with some fishtank how to’s….

Green Thumb videos coming soon!

(thanks again Wil for the call)

Score big with S.C.O.R.E.

February 15th, 2010 by Dustin

(written 1-11)

One of my goals in 2010 is to expand the mentorship program I started last year.

I am constantly on the look out for business owners or high level employees that are willing to "talk shop" with someone younger.

All age groups are different, but I think there is real knowledge that is easy to tap into with people who have been there before.

I score with SCORE. My first visit to Score (on Waller, on your left before you get to the RR tracks) was probably a year ago. Maybe less then that.  I’ve found I can get a lot further in business by asking someone who’s been there before.

My favorite counselor at Score is Kurt Hulliger. He’s probably in his late 60’s (not sure) I’ve been meeting with him about every month since the start.  Last Friday was a real treat though.

I called Score on Friday the 8th of Jan at 10am and asked if Kurt was there. Shocker he was. Second shocker, everyone had canceled there appointment that day because of the snow. (people in KY freak out about a little snow. I’m from Ohio and was raised in an igloo apparently…)   This has become one of my favorite things to do on Friday mornings. I go and gab about my business issues before I wrap up the week.

This Friday was a big deal because I was finalizing giving up a slice of my baby Green Thumb to Les. (Old man sold me!)  I think I can do everything and needed someone to tell me that my decision was best for the growth of my business.

Making small talk, I asked Kurt how is X-mas break was. He replies, "It was difficult not having a schedule." Ok, this guy is "retired" but keeps active in Score and gardening. He’s a do-er.  I’d bet he doesn’t sit on the couch and veg out, he’s working, always working.

Kurt goes over my concerns and helps me like he always does.  At the end I share with him the good new,  "Kurt, Green Thumb hit it’s goal in 2009 and wants to buy a new sign from Adcolor."  He instantly smiled and gave me his son Stephan’s cell and direct extension.  Kurt then tells me that we should go some time and check out Adcolor.  I said, "how about now?"

What happened over the next two hours has been blowing my mind for the past three days…

We headed to Adcolor which I imagined to be a decent sized operation. I had no idea.  Now keep in mind. Kurt always is helps ME with MY business. Now I was getting to see the core of the company he created.

If companies are trees, my business is a sapling, his a red-wood.

We walk in and are instantly greeted by friendly staff members.  He introduces me to his son Stephan who warmly greats me. They are speaking in german and I am only able to catch 1/3 of it…..but they love that I am "Wunderlich or Vunderlish" as you would pronounce it there. (they are swiss however)

I am introduced to Bob and several others up front. All of which are happy to see Kurt and treat me well because, I’m with Kurt.

He shows me the back where the work gets done.  The back is enormous. He shows me a machine he bought early on when he got started from a place a half mile from where he was born in Switzerland. This machine is $50,000  He explains to me that this machine is "the best" It was made by german engineers. I shrug my shoulder and say, "Natulich" German for "Of coarse"  He smiles.

We go on and he explains how when he first started researching the business that he saw that UV technology was changing the print industry. He tells me about how you can use less ink and it dries faster ect.  This insight was a catalyst for him wanting to learn the business, a need in the market place.

We walk to the back and are continually greeted by people who hug him and greet us with warm smiles and hellos.  He introduces me a lady who has been working for him for 13 years. I ask her why she stays around and she tells me that she likes what she does and the people she works for. Kurt tells me, "If you want loyal customers you have to have loyal employees first" (something like that)

All over the place are ads for bread sticks and pizza. It’s 12ish and I am getting hungry. The ads are for Little Caesar’s pizza. They are the printer for Little Caesar’s Pizza.  This is a company who’s cheapo pizza I used to eat in Findlay. I can only fathom what this account is worth. How’d they land it, I ask.  A referral from a client who was already working with them at another job…a loyal customer.

We continue our tour where he shows me the back bay where they do vehicle wraps. He opens the door and goes, "room for more."

He takes up to the design section after showing me several 30,000 to 50,000 printers. While down there he tells me how during a down economy you need to increase market share. (i’ve been preaching/living this, but it’s great to hear it confirmed)  He tells me to buy while the manufacturers are hurting and discounting. (great tip)

We go up stairs and are again created by people loving seeing him around.  It’s obvious he is loved by his employees. They are all the designers. NOTE: Designers are Far from the sales team.   One girl Bethany particularly sticks out. She had a killer drawing of a warrior chick on her desk. She was a designer who hugged Kurt and really lit up when he came by. You could tell that this girl came to work everyday and liked what she was doing and who she was doing it for.  Everyone is like this.

(Full Disclosure, I am now doing some minor SEO for Adcolor)

We walk towards the front and finally link up with Dave, who Kurt has been looking for the whole time. I’m pretty sure Dave runs the place more or less now.  Kurt has me tell him what I do. I tell him and he’s thrilled. We set up a meeting which went on today.

As I am waiting on Kurt to wrap up with a guy, Dave asks me if there is anything else I need.  I wanted to say, "yeah, the secret to getting my business to this!"

When you own your own business you put more then just work into it. You business is you .

I have always admired Kurt for his advice.  But to see what he and his staff has built was icing on the cake…that and the fact they have been in INC magazine for fastest growing companies makes me Green with envy. (a goal of mine)

Thanks Kurt-for all  of your solid advice all the time and the great tour of your company.

The Mad Scientist and Johnny Apple Seed of Green Thumb

February 11th, 2010 by Dustin

We have a sick demo of how easy it is to upload photos and make changes on our custom CMS.

Jarod (mad scientist) has spent a great deal of time working on this demo.

Johnny Apple Seed busted it out on a guy today in a pitch for the first time. The guy I was pitching ate it up.

People often complain about how to make changes or add photos to a site. Those days are gone with our CMS.

Check out our Demo in the footer below for a small bite of an apple from the Green Thumb tree.

Taste it!

Tony Dungy and Mentoring Vick.

January 30th, 2010 by Dustin

I’d like to relate some of my mentoring ideas into a bigger picture.

If you name the most toxic NFL player of our decade it is probably Mick Vick. (OJ would be second IMO)

Mike Vick killed and tortured dogs. I don’t even like dog…..yep…I’m a cat person. I still feel what he did was wrong though…

So with Mike Vick being the most toxic guy in the NFL, there has to be someone who could help bring him back.

That man is Tony Dungy. Tony Dungy is a religious man. I’m not big on religion, but I admire Tony Dungy greatly.

A quick back drop of why I like Tony Dungy….
1. People forget that he built a Tampa bay team out of nothing. He was let go and Grueden came in and won a super bowl the next year. (It was Dungy’s team)

2. Tony Dungy’s kid hung himself. I have a daughter who can’t even talk or walk yet, but I can’t fathom what I would do if something happened to her. It would slaughter me, but her taking her own life…its beyond think able. Tony Dungy played through it…

3. Tony Dungy won a Superbowl. He beat the Patriots and then went on to beat the Bears in the big show. (this was also the first time two black coaches were ever in the superbowl too)

4. Tony Dungy left the NFL and an incredibly well built football organization with the best quarterback ever. (yeah I said it, Manning is it-period) He left it all behind to be with his family…and to MENTOR YOUNG MEN.

You can read the article at length about Dungy and Vick…

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=100128/TonyDungy

I guess I like Dungy because he has the giving spirit that some men older then I have to help younger people. He seeks out trouble and tries to make a difference. He’s got nothing to gain but a feeling of helping someone….

Read that article. It talks about him visiting Vick in jail….it’s long. It’s good.

Green Thumb is currently interviewing 14 year olds…

January 29th, 2010 by Dustin

That’s right.  I spent late afternoon yesterday interviewing five 8th graders over at Jessi Clark Middle School.

I know what you are thinking, wow that guy is seriouse about hiring younger kids because of their natural technology skills.

Nah, I like my young guys for my business, but not that young…

I was helping out a friend of mine named Gabe who was prepping his students for getting a job in the real world.

It was pretty funny to watch 14 year olds come in dressed in business atire answering the questions I was throwing at them. The girls were the best though…"and like, I like, so like, its like"

Like like like like…

The best was the look on the kids face when I asked him, "So what are you currently doing to strengthen yourself mentally, physically and spiritually?"

…kidding…I’m not that cruel.
