Is there any better feeling?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010 by les

Yesterday, Green Thumb finalized a massive website that we built for KY Eagle Beer (www.kyeagle.net).   Take a look at it sometime….it is truly off the charts gorgeous!!!!

A great feeling comes from the completion of this project.

That  great feeling is the reaction of the customer when the final product was delivered.  Kentucky Eagle was wowed big time!!!!!  They are incredibly excited at the new presence that KY Eagle is rolling out for the whole world to see (isn’t that amazing in itself).  They were most kind in expressing their appreciation to Green Thumb Marketing for a job well done on the completed project.

The next step for Green Thumb is to put this website to work for the customer by implementing name planting and search engine optimization (SEO) tools for KY Eagle.  These will make this beautiful website a workhorse for them.

Without a doubt, Green Thumb will reap the feelings of accomplishment with a satisfied customer once again when these are done.

I ask again……is there any better feeling?

Youtube is still the horse I am betting on….

Tedx Conference Lexington Rave Review.

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 by Dustin

I loved Friday’s Tedx Conference.  It was great, much needs to go out to everyone who was involved in getting it rolling. I think Kent Lewis was the horse, but there are probably others… GREAT JOB.

The Ted Conference series takes place all over the US. Below is video from one that I found interesting.

Why did I particularly love this event. One word. Passion.

Everyone who spoke, spoke with passion about what they were talking about. I didn’t see a single presenter who wasn’t behind their topic with all of their heart and soul. Some were better speakers then others, but you could tell they were "all in" on their topic.

I won’t recap each speaker, but rather just some of the notes I took down….

"If you are afraid of being wrong, you’ll never make anything good. Kids aren’t afraid of being wrong. A girl was painting a picture of God in art class. The teacher came up and told her that people don’t know what God looks like. The girl replied, "They will when I’m finished."

Sustainlex.org’s Jim Embry asked, how many of you care about rocks?  Funny cause I just went rock gathering with Bryan two days ago.  I then walked up to him and had to show him my video clip of it…

Jim Bates told the story of how ESPN was spawned in a hot car during the summer. He also told of how now kids aren’t as connected as they were before to sports. They have AA leagues and travel sports, club teams ect.  In the old days kids would gather in someones back yard and have to pick teams and resolve the conflicts of "Out or Safe"  Now parents are involved and have removed that.  Now kids play with extra show-boating to get on sportcenter. (or leave early for the NBA…darn you J.Wall)

Passion.

Stanley Hainsworth talked about how he had spent his whole highly successful career in design to with both nike and starbucks to start his own line. He told everyone in the audience the same thing. Don’t do anything unless it is what you love. Nothing else matters. The guy is mostly bald and has his hair spiked on the sides and back..

These are the kinda events I would like to attend more often…..Great job Lexington!

Adam Martin leaves me pumped up….

Monday, April 26th, 2010 by Dustin

I just got off of the phone with Adam Martin of Adam Martin designs. Figured I’d spread some love…

I love talking to Adam.  He’s in my reverse mentorship program and Adam is out there hustling just like me to help young blood take over Lexington little by little. I’ve known Adam for over 2 years now from all kinds of networking events. He too has a new baby which we often talk about.

A few weeks back Adam posted something that really struck a cord with me.

You can read the post here…

The two minute version is that Lexington’s beloved horse industry is hurting. ( I know what your thinking, "Oh God Dustin, don’t talk bad about the Horse Industry in Lexington, it’s career suicide)  Too bad. My comments are on record on Adams blog.

Bottom line: If the Horse Industry wants/needs to reach a younger demographic, then how are they possibly going to do it with old media, old ad agencies and the old way of marketing? They aren’t. This is why they are hurting so badly now from lack of evolution.

Think I’m wrong? Man or woman up and leave a comment. (or hide because you are afraid of expressing yourself)

Anyway, I wanted to give him some credit for helping with TedX and for getting Will Gay from Yellow Shoes to Lexington.

Keep hustling man, we got this!

First Blog

Monday, April 26th, 2010 by les

This is my first blog.   Up until now I have been a little intimidated by blogging, but I figure  "…..what the heck.  You either grow or you grow old" (since I am 64 years old, this applies greatly to me!!!!!

That is the first thought that I want to share……  The upsides to be gained from new concepts like blogging are well worth the time that one spends learning to do it.

Remember….learning is like a "mental muscle"……you have to do it regularly to become strong at it.  So, get out there and exercise.

Great speaker yesterday at Lexington Adclub…

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 by Dustin

So I love an engaging speaker while I scarf the always killer food at the Hyatt downtown.  Yesterday was the best I have heard yet at the Lexington Adclub.

It was Will Gay who’s name means nothing to you. But the name Disney does, right? He works for the "Yellow Shoes Creative Group" agency that is essentially Disney brands in house agency.  Wicked…

My man Adam Martin had all kinds of time with him, and I would have loved to have had more as well. Dave C. at P.O. was kind enough to let me sit next to him at lunch where we chatted for a quick second before he spoke to the group. Thanks Dave….

So I am actually new to this branding thing but I am falling in love fast. I suck at design but are really digging the power of a brand the more I get into it.  Disney- talk about a brand.

Will mentioned how Disney has to pick out who is going to say after the superbowl, "I’m going to Disney World!" He said that that spot is basically cemented in stone. People want it left alone and love it just the way it is. How cool is that?  They’ve tried to tinker… it is powerful as is.

He also spoke about the office culture at Yellow Shoes and how they have all kinds of fun spaces, couches, ping pong and where creativity goes wild. They even had a spontaneous wall of mullet drawings show up! Awesome… Funny, because today  I was complimented by an intern of how laid back GT is and how that keeps energy high….hmmm… that company culture idea again.

My favorite part of his talk was the advice he got from an Oscar winning director with a sweet name that I can’t remember… his advice, "Don’t put out shit."  That’s so simple.  He joked about it. He also repeated it, and I am betting my ass that he took it to heart too!  Good advice!

At the end he had Q and A.  During, he had showed us several segment that were so far out that they had no chance of making the cut.(funny stuff that was "over the line")  He showed them often to us and it was clear there was a pattern of this. I asked him if this was intentional, he said yes. The idea was that you need to hit them in the face with wild material so often that they are used to it. So when something killer comes out they don’t just dismiss it. It might make them uncomfortable, but it also be really awesome.

That "funny, over the line" stuff wasn’t shit.

"Don’t put out shit."— Got it

Southland Drive needs a sidewalk.

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 by Dustin

I was walking with Nola the other day for about an hour. We meandered over to Southland to check out the farmers market and my favorite people at Sloans.

I eat Sloan’s about 3 times a week. Everyone in there knows me. They know me so well that once I sent Jessica in there with my sandwich order and Crissy goes. "Is this for Dustin?" (can you say loyal customer?)

But the fun part is when daddy brings his daughter in there. I had two women drop what they were doing and snatch up Nola. She charmed them up like she always does….I got a sandwich.

Southland Drive speaks to me in a special way. My guess is that over 75% of the businesses are locally owned.

I live behind Lafayette Highschool so working on Southland is a joy. Accept for one thing.

Southland needs a sidewalk. There is no uninterrupted way to get from Rosemont Garden to Nicholasville Rd. I have my paths, but there needs to be a big huge sidewalk all the way down it.

Lexington loves crying about keeping itself Lexington, but they pump money out into areas like Hamburge. I could be in any city in the US when I am out there. No uniqueness, no cool vibe.

Southland has that vibe. Now give us a sidewalk.

note: There was talk of funding for this that I haven’t been keeping up on. I don’t know if it is happening, but if you do know, please let me know.

Life and Death on Facebook. 2 examples of Facebook and our changed society.

Saturday, April 17th, 2010 by Dustin

Here are two examples that stick out for me about how real facebook is.  I say facebook, but this could include any online communication platform….

Life and Death.

1. The birth of my daughter is on facebook. (thank god it was a c-section!)  Yes, and I don’t care. Only one person said it was TMI.  I think its sweet and so did over 40 people in less then an hour with over 80 comments total…all sharing the awesome birth of Nola.

2. "Re-connect with Gary Crider"  Gary Crider is dead. He was a fraternity brother of mine who died of a massive heart failure last summer.  His picture pops up and I get reminders of him to "reconnect."…thanks fb.

If you are reading this and thinking, "this is out of bounds." You’re wrong. There is no out of bounds anymore. It is real.

Wild Wednesday Wunderlich Web Workshop.

Thursday, April 15th, 2010 by Dustin

Wild Wednesday Wunderlich Web Workshop.

Say that 5 times fast.

So we are excited about having our 3rd workshop next week. The first two were great and this one will be no exception.

The room is already booked.

The next W.W.W.W.W. is April 21st at 2pm at Commerce Lexington.

…and no, you don’t have to be a chamber member to be there.

I’d also like to point out that this isn’t a talk, this is a workshop. You are going to be doing some work if you come. I’ll be answering any questions and I have a few topics to cover if need be.

Bring your laptops and get ready to work on your web presence.

See you next Wednesday at 2!

Only 3 spots left so email me or leave a comment to save your spot!
