Last Friday, a good Friday…

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 by Dustin

(this didn’t post last Friday, but it was still a good day worth noting)

It always feels good to end the week on an up note.

Today was one of those good Fridays.

It started with my baby sitter Mrs. Kim wanting to trade out baby sitting hours for a computer–her idea.  DONE. (I’ve got computers out the ying yang…)

Then I rolled over to Auto Tech Service on Winchester Rd. They are a client we picked up last month. I’d like to note that they are friendly with Powers Transmission , who’s been our baby since GT was just a little tree. (David Powers even went as far as to say Green Thumb was one of the best marketing moves they’ve made…POW)

I’m excited about Auto Tech because they are into it. Rebekah is aggressive with their website and is constantly messing with it and learning our Joomla platform.  This keeps me pumped up because the more they play with it, the more it will do for them. (some people still think websites are set it and forget it…not in 2010)

The best part though is that the owner Robert appears to be excited about the search results they are getting. I don’t want to brag, but they’ve gotten over 150 uniques in 10 days since we started. Bam!

Then I stopped by Stewart Air Conditioning and was greeted like I always am by J, who might be the most friendly person on the planet…

At 4:45 my guy Josh from the chamber came over and we drank a few Samuel Adams and moved a massive freezer out of my garage.

and then I had Tacos….

nuff said!

Happy Birthday My Baby! (not Nola, YouTube!)

Monday, May 17th, 2010 by Dustin

In case you don’t visit YouTube everyday like me, I’d like to point out that YouTube turned 5 years old today. My how the time flies.

It’s hard for me to imagine life without it…

Let’s celebrate. What’s your favorite YouTube Video?

Here’s mine…

What’s yours?

Adam Martin leaves me pumped up….

Monday, April 26th, 2010 by Dustin

I just got off of the phone with Adam Martin of Adam Martin designs. Figured I’d spread some love…

I love talking to Adam.  He’s in my reverse mentorship program and Adam is out there hustling just like me to help young blood take over Lexington little by little. I’ve known Adam for over 2 years now from all kinds of networking events. He too has a new baby which we often talk about.

A few weeks back Adam posted something that really struck a cord with me.

You can read the post here…

The two minute version is that Lexington’s beloved horse industry is hurting. ( I know what your thinking, "Oh God Dustin, don’t talk bad about the Horse Industry in Lexington, it’s career suicide)  Too bad. My comments are on record on Adams blog.

Bottom line: If the Horse Industry wants/needs to reach a younger demographic, then how are they possibly going to do it with old media, old ad agencies and the old way of marketing? They aren’t. This is why they are hurting so badly now from lack of evolution.

Think I’m wrong? Man or woman up and leave a comment. (or hide because you are afraid of expressing yourself)

Anyway, I wanted to give him some credit for helping with TedX and for getting Will Gay from Yellow Shoes to Lexington.

Keep hustling man, we got this!

Life and Death on Facebook. 2 examples of Facebook and our changed society.

Saturday, April 17th, 2010 by Dustin

Here are two examples that stick out for me about how real facebook is.  I say facebook, but this could include any online communication platform….

Life and Death.

1. The birth of my daughter is on facebook. (thank god it was a c-section!)  Yes, and I don’t care. Only one person said it was TMI.  I think its sweet and so did over 40 people in less then an hour with over 80 comments total…all sharing the awesome birth of Nola.

2. "Re-connect with Gary Crider"  Gary Crider is dead. He was a fraternity brother of mine who died of a massive heart failure last summer.  His picture pops up and I get reminders of him to "reconnect."…thanks fb.

If you are reading this and thinking, "this is out of bounds." You’re wrong. There is no out of bounds anymore. It is real.

Google changes name to Topeka. Gmail gets smarter

Thursday, April 1st, 2010 by Dustin

So here I go again, back to loving on Google.

You have to love it. On April Fool’s day they change their name to Topeka. How much fun is that?

Ok, put aside the fact that they have the best search engine in the land. Put aside the fact that they have the best email ever. Put aside the fact that they own YouTube (and I love YouTube!)

Google is a just plain cool company. They build great stuff and appear to be having fun. The Topeka spoof is awesome along with all of the other homepage changes they make on certain holidays.

They are even fun when they are screwing up. I posted this yesterday, but it is worth repeating. Here is the error message I got when I was trying to do a video reply to a YouTube video.

“500 Internal Server Error

Sorry, something went wrong.

A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation.
Also, please include the following information in your error report:

G_Ge3jSGbJCpAoLM2q6t0ktmQt1hHSnwT1i8_sz1USWkXlM3v1JOzq02pSPS

p-D0ia2pYgMF2VIabr-wwXZsID-do9N3F_gQLvU6rxTDjS7eN88OoDM0lm9d”

I doubt people see an error in Google often but when they do mess up they make light of it.

Google isn’t afraid of screwing up and launching something that might have some error. Kinda funny because they advance faster that way. I am be believer in that something will advance a bunch faster if you just release it. If you keep sitting on it, it’ll never get done and you wont have any feed back.

Google would rather try it and fail then fail to try.

The gmail vowel removal was also funny. But better then that…

Gmail is now reading my emails….

I sent an email that in the body said, “attached is a ….”

I went to send that emails with out the attachment and i got a reminder pop up. “you wrote attached is and attached nothing. Would you like to add the attachment before you send.”

Bet you Yahoo’s email doesn’t do that!

Any Gmail users out there?

Interviewed on my day off.

Monday, March 29th, 2010 by Dustin

Nola’s sitter is out of town today so daddy spent Monday with his princess. We still managed to get a little work done and a quick interview. You can hear Nola chime in a little here and there….

Tyler was referred to me from the great Kurt Hulliger over at SCORE. ( Read any of the posts labeled mentor for more on Kurt)

Tyler is working on an entrepreneur type degree then off to law school at U of L (I know). Tyler needed to interview an entrepreneur, I don’t even really think of myself as one but…

Here’s my quick story of how we got to Green Thumb…. Part one. (youtube only allows 10 minutes max, this is 7)

The Man behind the scenes is about to be blogging..

Saturday, March 27th, 2010 by Dustin

Les asked to have his own login to blog on Friday.

I’m thrilled.

The man hasn’t made a peep on the blog yet but has been with Green Thumb for like 5 months.

You see Les has been working on cleaning up the garden.  Sometimes we get a little messy when we plant our plants. Les has done a wonderful job cleaning up that mess.

I am excited to see what he has to say.

Bring it baby!

Loyal Customer Friday. Why we play the game….

Thursday, March 25th, 2010 by Dustin

I love Fridays. (stating the obvious)

Tomorrow going to be especially great though. I have a meeting with Copy Express about getting them higher up on some Google searches.

These guys have been nothing but fun to do business with and I’m proud to say that we put out a sick looking site for them. What’s even better is that they pass along the good news when it comes in. Every time they have got a compliment on their site they pass it along. It doesn’t sound like much, but who doesn’t like being told they have done a good job.

For lunch I am meeting with Jonathan Wilk at Floor Coverings International. He was kind enough to have me talk to his BOAB group the other day. He also started the fire under me to have the weekly workshops.

He also originally told me I was cocky, arrogant and that I talked too fast. Frankly, I appreciated him shooting me right between the eyes from the start of our relationship. He was candid and told me what he thought of me. I appreciate a man who speaks what he thinks, we grew because all the cards were on the table. But Browns fans stick together ;)

So the point is this… Tomorrow will be a gratifying experience. It isn’t about the money. It is about people buying Green Thumb. They are buying the work we have put in. They are willing to listen because we have provided value to them.

These guys don’t know the ins and outs of search. Nope, but they know that they are going to be taken care of.

So am I asking these guys for more business, yes. But here is what I learned from Harvey Mackay. (Killer book called, "How to swim with the Sharks without being eaten alive.") You don’t do it for the money, you do it for the satisfaction that you get from helping someone….money is just a bi product.

It’s days like this where a guy like me get the most fulfillment. I could make more money working for the man. (for now) But I get a greater reward then money, an inner strength, shooting for my goal to be loved by all.

My buddy was busting my chops about how I hate TV. That’s right I think TV is for the mindless. Sure there are good parts, but why let something force feed you what they want you to see and hear?

Pick out something, ANYTHING and play with it online and you’ll be shocked at how much more fun it is to interact then to just have the communication go one way.

Here’s a simple test. Post something that you love as a video on youtube. I post videos of my fishtanks…

Sit back and wait until someone comments on your video.

A total stranger commenting on your passion that they share is much more fulfilling then….um, episodes of LOST.

Anyway…

This is a clip from Clay Shirky about TV. I thought you’d enjoy it….

Seth Godin explains Intrawest and my love of Snowboarding at Snowshoe WV

Monday, March 22nd, 2010 by Dustin

Seth Godin officially has my attention now until I can read every book he has published. I’m through about 3 of around 11.

In, "All Marketers are Liars" page 160.

He doesn’t even mention Snowshoe, but I get it now.

You see, he tells of how Intrawest is planning on building a "100 year old French Village" in the Alps.

Why would Intra west want to do that? Because it will be awesome that’s why. Because people would talk about it. People would remark about it. It would be "Remark-able" It would flourish from the word of mouth attention.

Snowshoe is also owned by Intrawest. Snowshoe is where I hide. I love it. I can hop in my crappy car and be there in 6 hours.

This 100 year old village made me think about my love for Snowshoe. Why do I love it so much?
Is it because it is the best snowboarding in the Mid-Atlantic? kinda.

But, I could go to perfect north for the day and travel only an hour and a half. Less travel and its way cheaper.

What about Wisp? My buddy Travis lives in Morgantown WV. I can crash at his place and rob his fridge too.. SAME DISTANCE as Snowshoe. Way less cost and a buddy to ride with

Here’s what it is with Snowshoe. Snowshoe/Intrawest do it right.

1. Snowshoe is on top of the mountain. That alone makes it just plain cool, everywhere you look- Killer Views
2. Snowshoe has a town on top of the mountain. You feel like you are, "king of the mountain"
3. Snowshoe has high speed lifts and groomers from out west. (people who know how to make it perfect condition)

It’s the full package. Do I pay a premium? Yeah, do I care? NOPE!

Do I tell everyone I know about my love for Snowshoe? Yep…(Rats they’ve got me!)

..brilliant marketing

Seth Godin has the longest running business blog on the web . You should check it out sometime….

Here’s me hitting a jump….
