In my humble opinion a good Web site is www.atasteofkentucky.com. It's a Kentucky product store and Web site based in Louisville, and their Web site is what I want for our gift basket business, Elegantly Handled Gift Baskets. As soon as the Home page loads you know what they do, what they sell, how to contact them. They have just the right number of attractive photos and the font size is big enough to read. Their Web site has a consistent look and, if you call them, helpful humans answer! What's not to love?

Comment on Customer or Vendor? by Fran P

Excellent point. Ideally, customers know what they want - and can tell the vendor. However, sometimes the customer doesn't know what he / she wants because he / she hasn't thought it through yet, or isn't aware of all the features and capabilities out there, or a number of other reasons.

For vendors, this makes listening and asking the right questions VITAL to earning the respect, trust and loyalty of the customer. A small business man I know who installs phone/communication systems took the time to listen to his customer. The customer had received bids from several other telecommunications folks who just wanted to sell their system, not meet the customer's needs. My acquaintance asked questions, tailored a phone system for the customer, and submitted a bid that was about $10,000 less than the other guys! Guess who got the business and the undying loyalty of his customer?

Thank you for the kind words. Perhaps lazy is a bit rough. Inarticulate could be more of the cause. I will say that I find it incredibly interesting the businesses that you can sit and talk to about what they have done and they have no problem telling stories from their history. (who doesn't like to talk about themselves?)

It's the gap of putting that story into writing that gets me. Sure it takes some time, but if one person, just one reads that story and can relate, it was worth doing...

and you guys are more savvy then you let on...;)

By the way - this video was finished last week and we have already sent it to:

* A bank, wanting to hire us for a grand opening

* A BIG Lexington company celebrating its 30th anniversary soon, wanting to hire us for balloon decorating

* A regional event / trade show company that hired us for balloon decorating for the April 30th Evening of Champions McKenna Foundation fund raiser

* Another regional event planner in charge of the grand opening of the new Meijer's store in Richmond.

So, the video's been handy!

Thanks for the kind words! However, let's also give credit to Johnathan, founder of Lighter Than Air and the one who asked for the video (great idea!), and to our charming and talented University of Kentucky intern Ashley Hodge, who created the video with our guidance. Congratulations to Ashley, by the way - she graduates this Saturday!
